Since I’ve forked out a gigantic $35NZ ($10 was shipping) for a new (laser) mouse, and was unable to find a review, I thought it’d be worth writing one.

GM-R03 (v1) Laser Mouse

Eye Candy
When I first saw the picture (above) Gigabyte have on their website, I was less than impressed.
In fact, I thought it was one of the most ugly PC mice I had ever seen. The picture also makes the mouse look extremely awkward. (Very short and high.)

However, in reality the mouse I was sent (blue) actually looks (and feels) really nice. The blue is so close in shade to the side (very dark blue) that it looks like it’s just been coated in plastic. And the hight is far more comfortable than my generic ball mouse.

Functionality
Before this, I had a 3-year old ball mouse, so I’m far from an expert on mouse sensitivity, but damn is this thing sensitive. The cursor moves right across my 1024px screen with just over 1cm (probably about 0.5″) of mouse movement.
I doubt my old ball mouse would manage it in less than 5cm. (~2″)

I’ve only got a couple of gripes about this mouse:
Firstly, the middle button (scroll ball) isn’t nearly as smooth as the one on the ball mouse.
Secondly, it will still ~0.75cm off the surface it’s on. This is fairly annoying when playing FPS.
Thirdly, the middle button -on the side of the mouse- acts as both a middle-click AND a back button. This is extremely annoying when browsing the web when combined with the regular middle-click button being a bit stiff.

Summary
+Cheap, +Sensitive, +Easy to use (and install), +Comfortable, +Looks good.
~Cannot see laser working.
-Middle-click a bit stiff, -One button acts as middle-click AND back, -Included software (Quick launcher) is ugly and programs cannot be customised, -No driver (one does come, but Windows XP says it is invalid), -Right-handed only.

Despite a few annoyances, it’s good looks, comfort and (especially) price make the Gigabyte GM-R03 (v1) Laser Mouse a great buy if you’re looking for an upgrade. (Or replacement)

Tracking
I thought I’d just add this in:
The mouse does not work on a mirror, or glass suspended a meter over the floor.
It should work fine on glass-topped surfaces (up to 8mm thick) though.
